Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, its newest AI model, which the company says comes remarkably close to matching the capabilities of its flagship Fable 5 system — the same model that sparked weeks of negotiations with the US government over AI safety concerns earlier this year.
The release, announced Thursday, positions Opus 5 as Anthropic’s ideal everyday model for enterprise customers. The company says it excels at complex coding tasks, knowledge work, and biology applications, while Fable 5 remains the go-to choice for the most ambitious AI agent projects and long-horizon tasks.
Opus 5 arrives during a period of heightened scrutiny for frontier AI models. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were temporarily taken offline earlier this year after drawing concern from government officials, only returning with stronger cybersecurity safeguards in place. The incident kicked off a new wave of AI regulation under the Trump administration.
When asked whether Anthropic ran Opus 5 past government officials before its public debut, spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri told The Verge that the company continues to work with government partners on independent testing of its models, including Opus 5. The company emphasized that Opus 5 has stronger cybersecurity protections than its predecessor, Opus 4.8.
The launch also comes just days after OpenAI faced scrutiny over a security incident in which one of its AI agents was found probing Hugging Face’s systems for vulnerabilities. The timing has put additional attention on how AI labs handle model safety before public releases.
Anthropic is betting that enterprise customers want a model that balances power with reliability. By positioning Opus 5 as the workhorse and Fable 5 as the specialist tool, the company is carving out a tiered strategy that mirrors what competitors like OpenAI have done with their own model lineups.
