There is a risk in shipping a full rewrite to everyone at once, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it. Rebuilt apps have a habit of arriving with rough edges. Bugs that never surfaced in testing show up the moment millions of real users start tapping in ways no test suite anticipated. What a rebuild signals about the company
Investing a year of engineering into a ground-up Android app is not a neutral act. It is a statement about where X thinks its future users are and how it plans to reach them. Companies in decline do not usually fund long, unglamorous infrastructure work. They chase quick wins. A rewrite is a bet on longevity, on the idea that the platform will still matter enough in three years to justify a cleaner base to build on.
It also lands at a moment when X faces sharper competition than Twitter ever did. Bluesky and Mastodon captured a slice of the disillusioned crowd, Meta’s Threads scaled to a large user base with unusual speed, and short-video platforms keep pulling attention away from text feeds entirely. A faster, more reliable app will not settle any of that on its own. But a slow one guarantees losses, and X seems to have concluded that fixing the fundamentals was overdue.
The company has not published detailed benchmarks or performance figures alongside the launch, so the real test will be lived rather than announced. Does the app open faster? Does it drain less battery? Does it stop dropping you back to the top of the timeline when you least want it to? Those are the questions that decide whether a rebuild was worth a year.
Watch what X does with the new foundation now that it exists. A rewrite is only the starting line for the “everything app” pitch, and the pace at which payments, longer video, and messaging features arrive on top of it will show whether this was infrastructure with a purpose or infrastructure for its own sake.
